This is a true story of a young man who at the tender age of nineteen joined the Army in peacetime only to soon find himself thrust into the horrors of war.
Follow Joe Grubb from his enlistment in 1940 at a time when this nationís army was small in numbers, poorly trained and ill equipped; then on to England in preparation for the Normandy Invasion and into the fight, until he was taken out of battle due to his wounds.
Joe describes his encounter with General George Patton on the eve of the invasion, his meeting with General Roosevelt during the hedgerow fighting and also meeting the famed war correspondent Ernie Pyle.
Though being awarded the Bronze Star and two Purple Hearts, the author never speaks of himself as a hero, but instead credits those who died as being the true heroes of the war.
